Mozambique - Tofo & Bazaruto (19-31 October 2025)

Our next destination was Mozambique - a country that I have always felt drawn to and wanted to visit. After six weeks of continuous project work (at Siyafunda and Rainbows), this was our break. We were excited to have some downtime and a chance to rest - and even more excited that Mum and Dad were joining us for three weeks (all of our time in Mozambique and the first week of our project in Zimbabwe). The girls had been counting down the days until they could see their Dadi and Dada, and all of us were excited to be able to spend time together after nearly 3 months apart. We flew into Maputo for just one night (where we were joined by Mum and Dad), and spent one week in Tofo and then the second week on Bazaruto archipelago.

One of the reasons to go to Tofo - other than it being a gorgeous beach town - was because they have a fantastic dive school there and Div and Sia were going to learn to Scuba Dive, whilst Anaya did a Bubblemaker course (which she promptly renamed “happy bubbles”). They had a wonderful teacher in Pedro, and both Div and Sia passed their Open Water PADI certification. I am so proud of them - to overcome fear and to get through the study in the weeks leading up to our time here. It was fascinating to see them study together, how they learn so differently and how they did in the practicals. When we went on some of the dives it was a really special moment to see them both gliding over the corals.

Bazaruto is a paradise island, with white sandy beaches, clear blue ocean and lots of snorkelling to do. We had so much fun, relaxed, played a lot of cards and games. It was so nice being with Mum and Dad - going snorkelling with them and the kids was something I will never forget. I am so grateful that I have the chance to see my parents and my children holding hands and swimming around in the ocean in awe of the life all around them.

A few days into our time in Bazaruto (so 10 days since we began our break in Mozambique), Div and I were talking and we realised that whilst we were so happy to be in a spectacular resort, we were itching to get back to do some project work. We were actually excited to leave behind the comfy beds, gourmet food and lush surroundings - to throw ourselves into something that might be cold, hard and basic but full of meaning. Paradise was nice (and the rest needed), but we were now missing something and ready to get back into the action. I wonder if this experience has changed how we will holiday forever.
